Question by Erick: Why can’t I restore my Dell Vostro 1000 by holding down on the F8 key after it boots up?
I’m pretty sure my dad’s laptop has a virus, because every time on the boot-up, it always has a popup that says its infected, and there’s nothing in the All Programs tab when I click on Start. I’ve tried restoring the laptop to factory settings by holding down the F8 key, and the only options are as follows:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode w/ Networking
Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows Domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure

Start Windows normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu
Shouldn’t there be a Repair Your Computer option???

Another reason to believe that my father’s laptop has a virus, is that a message pops up saying the SATA drive is corrupt and can’t be readable or something like that. Is the only option left to order backup disks, or should I try something else? Please help ASAP. Thanks

How to reinstall a operating system with out a recovery disk. If you can’t find the ones that you made or the ones that came with the computer. I assumed you already tried (and failed) to use the recovery partition. This means that the next step is to call tech support, and tell them that the recovery partition doesn’t work, or you can’t find the recovery discs you made… and then they can SELL you a set of recovery discs.

That’s just the way it works. There are two other ways use any other disk and when it is time to activate, call Microsoft on the phone with the activation window open and give them the coa or product code on the phone and they will activate and give you a number at that time.

You need the OEM installation specifically for the same version of the windows that came with your laptop. Otherwise, anything other than an OEM installation of that is the same kind that came with your laptop (Basic, Professional, etc) your product key won’t work. Of course, if you choose to go that route, make sure you FIRST download all the drivers for your model laptop… else you might have trouble going on line afterwards to get the drivers. You could copy the i386 file that would make it not so hard.

So I tried using the camera on my phone to record some videos, I used it for this set. The quality and sound are not as good, but it is still a nice backup camera especially for the gym. Still learning how to use it, getting my videos off the phone was a huge hassle, and still need to workout some kinks. There was sound in the videos but only if I played them specifically in quicktime player, but once I put them in windows movie maker they didn’t have sound, so I actually had to use another program to record the quicktime videos in the background playing to get sound haha. Hopefully I will fix this. My phone is much easier to work with and beats dragging around a medium sized digital camcorder all the time haha, plus paranoid people at the gym don’t assume its a camera but merely a phone lol, so in a way i am doing them a favor lol. I had tried a 380 bench and failed yesterday, then threw in some light close grip benching afterwards, and just did a rep out with 225 with no spotter, I think sooner or later with a spotter I will hit 15 reps. This was filmed on wenesday.

Question by Zack Neff: Why are my files disappearing on Windows 7?
I’m not really sure when this started but at one point I got on my computer all my personal files are missing.

-My desktop folders disappeared
-My music files/pictures/videos are all hidden
-My Program Files (x86) folder is hidden
-Search tool wont reveal them
-When I go to a folder and click the hidden box, nothing shows up
-I tried the backup tool to a week before the problem started and it doesn’t fix anything

I know the folders are still there because when I try to make a new folder in place of the old one it says “file name already exists, would you like to replace it?”

Does anyone have any idea what I have done, or how to fix it?
Tony: I have Norton Internet Security 2010 and it says my computer is clean.

2618258850 f56af68628 m Q&A: Is it possible to make a SATA HDD a slave to an IDE HDD?
by quapan

Question by Luna: Is it possible to make a SATA HDD a slave to an IDE HDD?
I’m currently fixing a problem one of my computers has. The problematic computer uses a SATA HDD, and currently Windows cannot load into the system. My computer keeps restarting during Windows loading and the “Repair” option during the re-installation wasn’t there (as if the Windows has already gone from the system). The hard disk has some important data which I needed to backup.

I tried using my fine computer’s HDD which also has Windows and uses IDE to backup the files on the SATA HDD. I heard that SATA HDDs don’t need to be set as slave but when I connect them together on the same mainboard, it keeps trying to load Windows on the SATA HDD and keeps restarting. The BIOS setting I used that time was:

- SATA Configuration (tried both enabled and disabled)
- 1st Boot Device IDE HDD (SATA HDD not in the sequence, I even tried disabling it)

In short:

- I tried to backup files from a SATA HDD which Windows is corrupted
- I tried using an IDE HDD as first boot device with the SATA HDD disabled but it doesn’t work.

Is there a way to let my SATA HDD work as slave so that I can backup some important files to the IDE HDD?

Thank you.

All SATA drives are masters. They have no ability, to become slave drives, just set it to boot from the IDE drive.

Answer by Sturdy Bad
it really should but there is an less difficult way to retrive the ntldr file with no having to reinstall almost everything. Put your windows installation disk in your personal computer and boot it up.
If it asks you where to boot from choose “Boot from CD”
Then it ought to give you the option “Repair Earlier Installation”. Windows will then go via and analyze all of the method files and repair/replace as required
