Online Computer Backup
Online computer backup is a fairly new service being offered by several Internet providers. For those of you who are not familiar with this type of service, basically, a host on the Internet will provide you with space to store a copy of your important files right on the Internet at their facility.
Online computer backup services have several unique advantages and a couple of disadvantages.
First and foremost, online computer backup is convenient. You can store a file online where you will be able to access it any where in the world where you can get good Internet access. The operative word here is good access!
Second, online computer backup, is usually quite inexpensive. With the price computer computer hard drives falling faster then you would ever believe, it is also very cheap for an online provider to give you more and more space for less and less money.
Third, if the provider of the online computer backup service has done his or her homework, they will have backup facilities built-in that you normally could not afford yourself.
Now the bad news. You need to make sure that you go with a repetable vendor of online computer backup services. Here’s some things you really need to be sure of:
- What is their connection speed to the Internet? And how much of that speed do you get at any time. This can be tricky. You never really know until you try their services sometimes.
- Are they secure? Can you be sure that confidential data can be trusted to this provider? Nothing is worse then trusting multimillion dollar secrets to a $10 service. Be careful!
- Do they perform backups on your behave? If this a secondary copy of your data, you can breath easy here, but if it’s our only copy, you need to know this!
The second part of the bad news has to do with your connection speed and online computer backup requirements. In other words, don’t expect to store 30 gigabytes of information to an online service when you only have dial-up access to the Internet. It just doesn’t work. So, always be realistic about your size demands when storing data to an online computer backup provider.
Where this type of service shines though, is when you need to get access to small amounts of files anywhere on any computer. Or you can provide access to several other people around the world in many cases too. This helps to fill the void when you need to send a file that is larger then 10MB’s. Email
will normally remove all attachments larger then 10MB’s when you send it in an email.
All in all, make sure you always check out who you will be trusting with your data! Most of all, make sure you just some sort of computer backup.

Great news for you all. I’ve found a great service to perform online computer backup! It’s amazon.com!
I’ve noticed a lot of Internet savvy individuals are beginning to store their downloadable multimedia files here at amazon.com, online.
Believe it or not, amazon.com does more then just sell merchandise, it also rents out some of its two billion dollar infrastructure to registered users at a great price!
One of these services makes data storage space available to users and it’s called Simple Storage Service or “S3“.
It’s really great because of these benefits:
1. No ads! Free video archives like youtube have but you don’t have to deal with the ads like youtube.
2. It’s a pay as you go service. In other words, you only pay for what you use. If you use a little, you pay very little. Only 15 cents per gigabyte per month.
3. No noticable delay (latency) in downloading. That means more people will see your videos and your upload and downloads of files are faster.
4. And most importantly, the chances of your data getting lost because of a server crash is practically zero! That’s because extra copies of your video or data are maintained in various places on Amazon’s server network, so that even if one server crashes, your data is still available! Believe it or not, this alone makes this service awesome.
But why haven’t you heard of this before? Well, the downside is Amazon doesn’t really offer an easy to use interface for the average guy or girl. And they really don’t advertise it very well. But don’t kid yourself, it’s an excellent service.
