Shouting in the Datacenter
By admin | January 5, 2009
Brendan Gregg from Sun’s Fishworks team makes an interesting discovery about inducing disk latency. For more details, see Brendan’s blog entry: http://blogs.sun.com/brendan/entry/unusual_disk_latency

how did he find that ?!

the point they’re pushing is about their statistics program that works on their platform with relatively inexpensive hardware.
I think its common sense that shaking a disk in any way is bad for it… that said, most of the people here (me too) are surprised that just shouting affects the disks so much!

He says at the beginning, “We just discovered this…” and I have to wonder HOW? Did you drop a rack on your toe or something?

jajjaja alucina !! pues nada, a ponerles música clasica para que giren a buen ritmo y esas latencias sean lo mas relajadas posibles… xDDDDD

50 procent of people listin to loud music.with a bass-box. so i guess thats also not good for your harddisk.

Another reason to get solid state drives instead of harddrives.

It’s caused by the relatively high low frequency components of his yelling. I observed exactly the same thing on a Sony Camcorder with a hard drive when recording musicians. I was getting error messages such as “buffer overun” when recording loud music. It was only when I realised that it was rock acts with heavy bass and drums that showed this fault and if didn’t happen with acoustic acts on guitar that I realised what the problem was. So try avoiding playing rock music really loud next to a PC

wonderful!!!

back when I was a newbie, and didn’t know about error correction, I wondered what would happen if you picked up the phone and screamed during a Gif downloading.
